“In the ten miles between Whartonscarp, where Halflings dig their burrows in the steep hillside, and the town of Baylebee, where they build houses to stand aboveground, there are three tiny villages of Halflings, and they practice a mixture of the two customs. They build burrow-like houses, too rickety to stand on their own, and fortify them with thick mounds of packed earth.”
